Southern Cultures: Black Freed Narratives in Place, Publication, and Performance

11:00 AM–Noon: A conversation between AfroCarolina Memory keeper, steward, and applied scholar Michelle Lanier and geographer Danielle Purifoy, longtime friends and guest editors of Southern Cultures. Together, they will voice an offering inspired by the places, spaces, memories, and possibilities of Black freedom.

SOHP and Community Memory: Danita Mason-Hogans

1:00–2:00 PM: Danita Mason-Hogans, a participant in SOHP’s Art & Oral History Incubator and a community scholar-in-residence at the National Humanities Center, will speak on the role of oral history and community memory in interpreting early American history and its long afterlives.

SOHP and Civil Rights: Partnering with LDF

2:15–3:30 PM: NAACP Legal Defense Fund (LDF) archivists and SOHP oral historians and project leaders will explore freedom as an ongoing and active pursuit. Hear audio clips from the LDF Oral History Project, describing LDF’s long history of defending rights and freedoms.
